What you need to know about Thai language
Introduction to Thai Language
Welcome to your Thai language course! As a beginner, you’ll find that Thai has some unique features that can make learning it both interesting and enjoyable. One of the most notable aspects of Thai is that it doesn’t have conjugation or tense in the way many Western languages do.
No Conjugation
In Thai, verbs do not change form based on the subject. For example, the verb “to eat” is กิน (gin). Whether you’re saying “I eat,” “you eat,” or “they eat,” the verb remains the same: กิน/gin. This can make learning verbs in Thai straightforward, as you don’t need to memorize different endings for different subjects.
No Tense
Thai also does not use different verb forms to indicate tense. Instead, context and additional words are used to convey whether an action is happening in the past, present, or future. For example:
- Past Tense: ฉันกินแล้ว (chan gin laew) – I ate (literally “I eat already”)
- Present Tense: ฉันกำลังกิน (chan gamlang gin) – I am eating (literally “I am in the process of eating”)
- Future Tense: ฉันจะกิน (chan ja gin) – I will eat (literally “I will eat”)
Context-Based Language
Thai relies heavily on context to convey meaning. Pronouns, particles, and other contextual clues play a significant role in communication.
Tone
Another key feature of Thai is its use of tones. There are five tones in Thai: mid, low, falling, high, and rising. The tone used can change the meaning of a word entirely. For example:
- มา (maa) – mid tone – means “to come”
- ม้า (máa) – high tone – means “horse”
- หมา (mǎa) – rising tone – means “dog”
